You’ve probably heard terms like ‘UI/UX’ or ‘Call To Action’ thrown around but you’ve never summoned courage to ask what they mean for fear of seeming not very bright upstairs. Well, today’s your lucky day. Below, we explain 15 of the most commonly used terms in the digital world today.
1. B2B
This means Business To Business and is used to describe companies that deal directly (or sell directly) to other businesses. For instance, we at ID Africa are B2B.
2. B2C
Short for Business To Consumer, this term describes companies that sell directly to consumers. For instance, Jumia Nigeria is a B2C.
3. Bounce Rate
Bounce Rate may refer to either Website Bounce Rate or Email Bounce Rate. Website Bounce Rate is the percentage of people who get to your website’s landing page and leave without clicking on any other thing or visiting other pages on the site. Email Bounce Rate, on the other hand, refers to the rate at which an email is unable to be delivered to a recipient.
4. Call To Action
A call to action is a text link or image that encourages your consumers or customers make the next step i.e. take an action. Lines like ‘subscribe now’ or ‘learn more’ are examples of call to action.
5. Cookie
Not the dessert but a small text file found on a user’s PC; it identifies the user’s browsers and stores usernames allowing the site’s offerings be more personalized.
6. Conversion Rate
This is the percentage of people who completed a desired action on a web page. When conversion rates are high, it means web pages are performing well.
7. CPC
CPC means Cost Per Click and refers to the actual price you pay when your ad is clicked online. Here, you don’t pay when your ad is viewed but when it is clicked.
8. Keywords
These are words and/or phrases relevant to your website. Keywords are used to index your site on search engines like Google and Yahoo. Long tail keywords are phrases that consist at least three words and are useful for targeting niche demographics.
9. KPIs
KPIs are Key Performance Indicators and are performance measurements that businesses use to measure if they’re achieving their objectives.
10. Landing Page
This is a web page that sort of serves as an entry point for a website. It is usually the first page seen after following a link.
11. PPC
Pay Per Click refers to the amount of money spent whenever your ads are clicked. It could also means the money you pay a search engine or a blog for everytime an ad is clicked on their page.
12. ROI
ROI means Returns On Investment and is usually used to calculate the efficiency and profitability of an investment. Its calculated as ‘Gains from investment’ minus ‘Cost of investment’ divided by ‘Cost of investment’. If ROI is negative, it means the investment is a loss.
13. SEO
SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. They are a set of techniques used to help your website have higher ranks on organic search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Bing.
14. Share of Voice
Usually shortened to SOV, this is the percentage of which your ad is seen as compared to other ads. If there are 5 ads being evenly rotated on a page, each ad has 20% SOV. If there is only one ad on a page, the ad will have 100% SOV.
15. UI/UX
In simple terms, UI deals with how things look while UX deals with how things work. UX is a process and UI is a deliverable. UI means User Interface and UX means User Experience.
