The recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa has caused a lot of tension in Africa. Some have lost their lives, while some of have lost their homes and belonging. Disturbing pictures of the attacks circulating have not made it any better. Consequently, families and friends in home countries have gone on social media to protest.
Using a witty and brilliant food commercial as a subtle form of protest, Nando’s has made a bold statement that advocates peace and logic – “real South Africans love diversity”. The Ad seems rather xenophobic at first, but the last scene drives home its point.
According to BBC, the commercial was first released in 2012 but several television stations including the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation refused to run it. The Ad has become popular on YouTube and a good number of South Africans are liking and commenting on the video.
The fact that this ad came out in 2012 shows that the presence of xenophobia and the possibility of the attacks had been noticed way back. It’s impressive that a food brand addressed the issue and publicize the ad on social media.
Says a lot about Nando’s creativity and ability to prepare for the future.
