How Kanye West, A College Dropout Earned His PhD

It is amazing how the college dropout, Kanye West, got an honorary doctorate. In 11 years, Kanye West has been able to work himself up the success ladder, but has also been thrown into a large amount of controversial limelight. His supposed links to the Illuminati, his highly opinionated statements, his mutually beneficial marriage to Kim Kardashian…

SAIC saw beyond all of this. In an interview with Vibe, the dean of the School of the Institute of Chicago, Lisa Wainwright has explained why Kanye, amongst others, deserved the honorary doctorate:

”This is a Chicago kid from a tough part of town who aspires to go to art school. That’s a great story,” Wainwright tells VIBE. “If Kanye’s on stage getting an honorary doctorate saying art school is important, that’s a message we want to send to our communities, to all communities.”

·         Kanye West is a model of the SAIC culture.

“He grabs what he needs when he has the feeling of that need.”

·         Let’s not forget the controversy.

“Controversy gets the public dialogue going and that’s the role of great art and design.”

“Glitch art is a big movement within video and film. It was 2009 and it’s called “Welcome to Heartbreak” directed by Nabil Elderkin.”

The main goals of the honour to Kanye West is to include SAIC in public dialogue and encourage students to express art in all forms, including popular music.
