5 Well Rated Movies You Should Binge-Watch This Weekend

It’s the last Thursday of November and we seem to have finally bid farewell to this year’s torrential rainfall after incessant complaints, no thanks to state-of-the-art Lagos roads. How rewarding that the God of the sky is now attempting to fry our internal organs with a heatwave enough to reawaken our evil consciences on the perils of hell fire.

As usual, many of us will head into the weekend with the hope of catching our breaths and stealing some valuable distraction time with several fun activities, especially after a long week of work. I’d say my weekend would be, as always, filled with fruitless shouts and curses at the TV screen while watching football matches but my darling football club has not been giving me much joy lately so, I’ll pass.

What I’ll do, instead, is binge watch a couple of relatively new movies, as I steal a now golden opportunity to escape Lagos’ hustle and bustle for two disappointingly short weekend days. There are a number of films I’m excited to see and you should check them out, too.

1. The Irishman

Robert De Niro in The Irishman

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino; Big screen legends. Full stop.

Unsurprisingly, this 3-hour long movie which depicts De Niro as a former hitman who reflects on his glory days (which included his role in his life-long friend’s disappearance) currently has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a must-watch.

2. Hustlers

Haha! Who would pass on a movie starring the ageless Jennifer Lopez. JLo and Keke Palmer, along with a couple more hot babes, star as strippers on a daring quest to turn their lives around using the wealthy Wall Street clientele who frequent the strip club. This also has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. *rubs palms in excitement.

3. The Knight Before Christmas

I absolutely love Christmas! Or the smell of it – the dry, minty, north-easterly wind on the West African coast called Harmattan. So, this movie is a perfect fit. Fave Vanessa Hudgens finds her knight in shinning armour in this romantic fairytale. And it’s rated 79% on Rotten Tomatoes!

4. Ready or Not

I detest horror movies, I’ve always seen them as pointless. But ‘Ready or Not’ arouses a totally different excitement in me. When I first saw the rather bizarre trailer months ago, a Twitter friend had encouraged me and requested that we see it at the cinema together. That didn’t happen but I have been looking forward to seeing the movie ever since. I’m excited to be seeing it now – with babe close by to assuage the horror. It’s rated 88% on Rotten Tomatoes so it should be good!

5. Queen of Hearts

You know why foreign movies give so much joy? No storyline is too vague or sacred to bring to life. This movie’s storyline – an adult woman’s reckless romantic affair with her teenage stepson – would have our darling Nigerian parents feverishly casting and binding the devil but you can’t deny the excitement it elicits. It’s in Danish (with subtitle) but I have reasons to see it as it has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Plus, it’s super erotic!

Bonus movie: Pink Wall.

So, my private weekend with bae is looking lit with this line-up of movies and I couldn’t be more excited!
