On January 24, 1935, the first canned beer went on sale.
Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company, in partnership with the American Can Company created about 2,000 cans of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale for Krueger consumers in Virginia, U.S.A. Over 90% of the drinkers found the cans convenient and wanted more. Consequently, more cans were produced.
Although manufacturers had used cans in the mass distribution of foodstuffs before January 24, 1935, it wasn’t until 1909 that the American Can Company made its first attempt to can beer. The attempt was unsuccessful because the cans could not withstand pressure, hence exploded.
However, after two years of research, American Can Company developed a can that was pressurized and had a special coating to prevent the fizziness in beer from chemically reacting with the tin.
Today, beer cans are everywhere.
