Some days, you just know you’re not leaving the house — and honestly, the month of May feels like one long excuse to stay in. Between the rainy weather and the general vibe (hello public holiday!), being cozied at home has never sounded better. And a delicious icing on the cake is everything Showmax is serving up this month. From laugh-out-loud moments to edge-of-your-seat drama, there’s something for everyone and every mood.
Here’s a May watchlist, handpicked for you by yours truly — ID Africans:
Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy

Who doesn’t love a good rom-com revival—and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy? Sign us up, please! It’s cute, funny, and emotional, and we’re fully obsessed and eager to see it.
Bridget returns for the final chapter (23 years later!) and is still as chaotic and lovable as ever. This time, she’s a widowed single mum navigating work, parenting, and the madness that is modern dating. Between the charming younger guy and the sweet chemistry with her son’s science teacher, we are set to be glued to the screen from start to finish.
And clearly, we’re not the only ones. Critics are raving—86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Independent called it “vulnerable, honest and very funny.” It’s already the fourth biggest box office hit of 2025. So yeah, when it starts streaming on Showmax from Monday, 12 May, we know exactly what we’ll be watching.
If you’re anything like us and love a good action-packed drama that gets your heart racing, you’re going to want to add this to your watchlist immediately.
Gladiator II picks up years after we all cried through Maximus’ death (still not over it, by the way). Now, it’s Lucius’ turn—forced to survive brutal battles in the Colosseum after tyrannical emperors take over Rome. His home is gone, his heart is heavy, and the only way forward is to dig deep, find his courage, and fight for the future of Rome.
Safe to say, the movie is already making serious waves. It scored two Golden Globe nominations—including Best Supporting Actor for Washington—and even grabbed a nomination for Best Costume Design at the 97th Academy Awards.
It starts streaming on Showmax from Friday, 2 May, and trust us, you don’t want to miss this one.
Just like that, our “Do Not Disturb” mode is locked in for May 26. We’re holding our breath, dodging flying cows (mentally), and getting completely sucked into Twister. Because when a movie comes from the creators of Jurassic Park, Bourne, and Indiana Jones, you know it’s about to be a wild ride.
Directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), the film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) and Glen Powell (Anyone But You), who team up to track the deadly power of tornadoes.
The movie is Rotten Tomatoes’ fifth highest-rated Action & Adventure film of 2024, with critics calling it a “storm of spectacle” and a thrilling ride.
So yeah, we’ll definitely be tuning in when it hits Showmax. You should too—just maybe it rains that night so we can get the full 3D experience.
After A Quiet Place and Bird Box had us holding our breath like our lives depended on it, we already know Never Let Go is about to put us through it again—and honestly, we’re so ready. Starring the queen herself, Halle Berry, and directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes), this psychological thriller looks like the kind of movie that’ll have us clutching to our pillows or whoever is beside us.
The story follows a mother and her twin sons who literally have to stay physically connected to survive whatever evil is lurking outside. But of course, one of the boys starts questioning if the danger is even real… and that’s when everything unravels. We’re already bracing for chaos.
Variety says the movie tackles grief, sanity, rebellion, and redemption.
We haven’t even hit play yet, and it already sounds like the kind of claustrophobic horror experience that’ll have us yelling at the screens and screaming.
Long story short: we’re clearing our schedule for this one. Who’s bringing the popcorn?

We love a good backstory, especially when it comes with attitude, ‘90s flavour, and a whole lot of drama. That’s why Raising Kanan is one of our picks for May. It’s not just any prequel — it’s the gritty, emotional, slow-burn origin of one of Power’s most ruthless legends: Kanan Stark.
Before the bullets, betrayals, and power plays, there was a teenage Kanan just trying to survive Southside Jamaica, Queens, and life wasn’t exactly handing out second chances. Mekai Curtis plays him with a mix of heart and heat, while 50 Cent (aka the OG Kanan) stays close as executive producer, keeping things raw and real.
Already locked in for Season 5, this show isn’t going anywhere — and we’re not mad at it. Even The Hollywood Reporter is impressed, calling it “more narratively meticulous and emotionally grounded” than anyone expected from a spinoff.
So yeah, we’re queuing it up, turning off our notifications, and preparing for a long binge-watching night. If you’re into street-smart storytelling with serious bite, Raising Kanan is your next watch. Don’t say we didn’t tell you.
So whether you’re in the mood for a heart-pounding thriller, a laugh-out-loud comedy, or a gripping drama, May’s lineup on Showmax has something for everyone. Happy watching!
