After watching the latest episode of MTV Shuga Naija, the ladies at ID Africa -Bibi, Sharon and Praise – on a mellow Thursday afternoon after lunch had a chat about what the episode had entailed. Read this eye opening excerpt from their chat:
Bibi: I personally think it is really so sad that Leila miscarried. I mean, before she even had the chance to make a decision, look what happens.
Praise: I can only imagine how she felt. My only consolation is that she didn’t use those weird pills that Diana gave her. Or use one of those potions that Diana would have cooked up.
Sharon: Honestly, if uncle Cyril had just allowed her keep and use the contraceptives Uju got for her none of this would have escalated. I mean, they already knew she was sexually active.
Praise: Yeah, it is disheartening to see how older relatives rarely ever want to speak up about sex. These things are happening but if young adults are properly informed, the consequences won’t be as dire.
Bibi: That’s why I actually really like how Corper Yasmin speaks to the girls she teaches. It’s not about giving a ‘free pass to sleep around’ like Uncle Cyril thinks, but proper information is key!
Sharon: Exactly. Same way ladies need to understand that because you slept with a guy once does not mean he has total access to your body to the point of raping you. I mean, look at what Bada did to Faa and the way Tobi’s acting and covering up for Bada. Totally shameful and sad.
Bibi: I just really hope that young people glean all of these lessons from Shuga. Know what is right for you and what is not; if you’re not abstaining, protect yourself properly.
Praise: And unless proper consent is given at that particular time, whatever sexual activity ensues is rape.
Sharon: I’m really looking forward to the next episode. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out eventually. You know, Leila, Hadiza, Faa and even Diana.
