With the announcement of the lockdown and social distancing restrictions, people had no choice but to stay indoors. A lot of people had to embrace drastic changes in their personal lives. Thankfully, technology never lets one down. Video calling became an essential part of the average Nigerian’s life.
From being the life of the party to entertaining your house plant (if you had one, to begin with), Nigerians had to adapt the hard way. Whether it was talking to family, having a work meeting or attending a wedding, video calling was the way people retained a sense of normalcy in their life.
ID Africa’s research team got curious about what young Nigerians were doing online during the lockdown and the kind of content they were more drawn to. To get some answers, they conducted a survey of 200 young Nigerians and studied the activities of social media users across the company’s owned platforms – Netng, 234Star, Neusroom, and Orin.
The report discovered that the number of time people spent video calling had increased during the lockdown. More than 75% of the respondents had increased their video calling hours, using different media platforms.
Almost half of your respondents preferred video calling using WhatsApp while more than 28% used the Zoom app for their virtual meetings. Other used platforms include Skype, Facetime and Instagram.
