Facebook will be opening a permanent office in Johannesburg, South Africa. The dominant social media company is looking to learn how marketing works in this part of the world and hopes to bring about profits that will consequently turn Facebook to a truly universal social product. The Johannesburg office will be open to small businesses that will like to advertise to Facebook’s audience.
Before now, Facebook has been working to build a customer base in Africa through programs like Internet.org. Recently, Facebook has recorded about 120 million Africans visiting Facebook monthly. This number has shown an increased familiarity of Africans with technology, hence, the region has become one to invest in.
Nunu Ntshingila, chairman of Ogilvy South Africa, will run Facebook as the Head of Africa.
