Epiphanies by Joseph Olaoluwa

My greatest epiphany was trying to get the “facts and figures” behind Omomewa’s death. Omomewa was a LASU activist who died in what many may term a drive-by shooting, even though it is still being speculated.

Meeting his brother-in-law gave me an even deeper view into how key my work in ID Africa is. First, for the platforms I write for and then as a member of a team. When I left the interview venue, I reflected that life actually does come to an end. Sooner for some and much later for others.

For me, my life has been about epiphanies. There’s always been a moment of learning in everything I do and that’s why the idea of untold stories excites me. And for the most part, it has kept me humble.

One could tell a story about a rich person who later became poor, or a popular and highly-paid footballer who now needs expensive health care which he can’t afford anymore. Or we can take a look at the rate at which newlyweds are seeking a divorce; people fleeing across the Mediterranean and the alarming death rate around the world or how a short TikTok video made a sound producer well recognised in the entertainment space. These realities keep me humbled, focused, and committed. It also reminds me that there would be breakthroughs and breakdowns.

The essence of life is to live and be part of a community. This is a guiding philosophy behind where we work and I am glad to be part of this community. Because I know that in the end, I would be better for it.

This weekend, I want to catch up on the Saturday Night Big Brother Naija party. I love the social experiment aspect of the reality TV show. And how it colours the dynamics of their lives vis-a-vis the outside world. I really want to see what the party will be like for Pere, now that Maria is out of the game, and if this weekend’s social activities will reconcile Angel and Boma after their shouting match last night. Also, I can’t wait to see who goes home next.

So here’s what my movie and music life has been lately. I am stuck with the Outpost – it’s a fantasy series I like. I’ve also been looking forward to watching Sex Education and House of Dragon, a spinoff to Game of Thrones, and Grownish. I can’t wait for the release of the next season of Insecure and season 2 of Sex/Life. While I wait, I’m locked in on Showmax as I watch BBNaija and the ongoing crate challenge on social media.

For a while now I’ve had Khalid’s songs on replay, especially “Better” and “New Normal”; both songs have a way of causing me to reflect on life and all that comes with it. You should try listening to Arya Starr’s 19 and Dangerous — you’ll thank me later.

All the best to you and me, of course!
