A‌ ‌Non-Movie‌ ‌Lover’s‌ ‌Guide‌ ‌To‌ ‌Navigating‌ ‌Video‌ ‌Streaming‌ ‌Platforms‌ ‌

Showmax Video Streaming Platforms

Growing up, I hardly had any favourite TV show and for the most part, I was unbothered by the fact that I hadn’t watched any of the most popular movies of those days.

It was regular for me to say things like, “I’m not a TV person,” “I’d rather sleep than spend an hour watching TV,” etc. Hence, I never got to fit into any room where people were randomly speaking about movies, actors, series, TV shows, and things like that.

My profession requires me to constantly be on the lookout for ideas, concepts, and simple but fascinating ways to present information. Unarguably, consuming creative materials and artistic works help to spark brilliant ideas and bring developing thoughts to life.

I decided to give watching movies and TV shows a chance, yet it felt ridiculous to commit a lot of money to this experiment, so I was looking for a quick way in, and an even easier way out if I decided to shelve the idea. At this point, I was searching for an affordable streaming platform with a free trial option where I can cancel anytime, and of course, find a bunch of nice things to watch.

How I stumbled on Showmax is a story I don’t really remember but I do recall how my first experience using the app went.

Signing up took less than it would take me to finish eating a slice of pizza and all I needed was to create an account then select if I want to watch on all my devices or just my mobile device. Based on my budget, I went with the Showmax Mobile plan although that meant I wasn’t going to have access to the News or sports channels. At least I could watch over 1000 movies, series, Showmax Originals, and more, so it made sense to me (I was new to this life and needed to start somewhere).

After inputting my payment information, my 14-day trial period began. To my surprise, I didn’t get charged for the service until the trial period ended, and when I finally got debited, I received a discount of 10% since I made payment with a Mastercard. This was quite thoughtful and impressive.

As I scrolled through the app’s clean interface, I could see all the different categories like what’s new to Showmax, movies, series, African Magic Originals, Live Channels (here I realised that I could watch the News on some local TV stations), Showmax Originals, trending movies, international reality TV series, documentaries, Nollywood films, and more.

I was thrilled to see dedicated channels airing the BBNaija reality TV show as well as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics 24/7. To conserve my internet subscription, I selected the minimum data usage of 300 MB per hour when live streaming shows, and I used the download feature to save movies and series I planned to watch later.

One of the first things I binge-watched on Showmax was ‘Insecure’, a popular HBO series by Issa Rae and now I’m looking forward to when the next season debuts. While I wait, I’ve been following all the BBNaija Shine Ya Eye drama and watching a bunch of really cool stuff.

Since I can upgrade my plan at any time, I’ve been considering a switch to the Showmax Pro plan before August 31, 2021, so that I can enjoy their ongoing promo and get access to more channels for two months while I pay for just one month.

I’d love to get some nice movie recommendations from you, send them in the comment section and if you’d like to start your next binge without any ads or interruption, you can download the Showmax app from Playstore or the App Store. There’s the option to cancel your subscription at any time but you’ll definitely not need to!
