Medium becomes latest platform to borrow from Snapchat’s Stories idea

Snapchat’s ‘stories’ seems to be a favourite for every platform right now and it looks like publishing company, Medium, doesn’t want to be left behind. Unlike Instagram, Facebook, Tinder and the rest however that basically just lifted the unique feature, Medium made some small changes in the form of name, as theirs is called ‘Series’. Also, series don’t disappear after 24 hours, instead users are allowed to post short photos and texts that can be updated continuously, over long periods of time.

Bearing in mind that Medium is not your typical Social media platform, it wouldn’t come as a shocker that dramatic emojis and filters are certainly not going to come with the new feature.

The company’s aim is to give room for users who love telling stories with text and photos, but don’t necessarily enjoy the lengthy piece style that Medium is traditionally known for.  So rather than wait until the end of your trip to Abeokuta to write a lengthy essay about the horrors you experienced, you can give short real-time clips, which can be updated continuously. The fact that these stories don’t disappear makes it even better, as anyone can follow your story, whether they started the journey with you or not.

Why wait till the end to tell your story?

This move, which is a push towards a subscription-based style might be a good one for the platform who recently had to lay off a good number of staff as they struggle to find a new business model that actually works and is different.

One thing’s for sure though, Medium’s ‘Series’ is definitely not your typical disappearing ‘stories’ feature and might prove to be more useful overtime.
