3 Social Media Marketing Lessons from Fox’s Empire

There are phenomena in Empire that will always keep us talking – from Cookie’s ghetto swagger to Lucious’ cunning business skills. These two and the entirety of Empire Entertainment subtly passed across marketing lessons to its audience. If you watch Empire over and over again, you will notice that most of the moves made in Empire Entertainment was meant for marketing in the long run.

The three social media marketing lessons we learnt from Empire are:

  •  Participate in Audience Activities

The artiste managers and the CEO of Empire understood the importance of building relationships with their audience. They tracked audience reactions and comments quite quickly. Remember when Hakeem made videos of his freestyles (even when he was drunk) and uploaded it online? That’s a pretty good instance.

  •  ‘Audience’ is generic. Create your Community.

As much as Empire Entertainment embraced a range of music genres, it was still the centre for Hip Hop and Rap. Music to Lucious Lyon was hope for those who were downtrodden, those who needed hoe and inspiration. Lucious also knew that his community was homophobic – that explains why it took him so long to accept Jamal’s ‘preferences’. Lucious didn’t build fans with Empire; he built a family.

  • Influencers Matter

Can you recall this scene from Episode 6 where Cookie convinced a famous football player with a lot of  followers to tweet about Jamal’s new single? His mention was a stepping stone for Jamal and earned him listenership online. That’s the power of one influencer.
