The fifth edition of the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious audience data-based awards, will return on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at 5 pm. According to ID Africa, owners of Nigerian Entertainment Today, this year’s edition will hold virtually with plans to reach even more people globally.
Multi-award winning artiste Simi leads this year’s nominations with an impressive six nods, doubling the three nominations she received last year. Simi’s six nods include ‘Most Popular Musician (Female),’ ‘Most Searched Musician (Female),’ ‘Most Played Song (Pop),’ ‘Most Played Song (Hip Hop),’ ‘Most Played Song (RnB),’ and ‘Most Popular Couple’.
Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, who all had chart-topping successes in the year under review, follow with an astonishing four nominations each. Other notable nominations include Ibidunni Ighodalo, Chadwick Boseman, and Folake Aremu (Orisabunmi), all of whom posthumously received nominations.
NET Honours is an annual recognition of top performers in the entertainment industry and public sector based on audience data from ID Africa’s media channels. This year, NET Honours recognises over 100 achievers in the entertainment industry through a thorough analysis of audience search results, consumer interest, social media interactions and trends.
The award is based on engagement from over 8 million internet users reached across websites, social media and email newsletter channels of Netng, Neusroom, 234Star and Orin between June 2020 and May 2021. The event celebrates musicians, actors, comedians, reality TV stars and public personalities who are subjects of Nigeria’s most exciting conversations in the year under review.
The 5th edition of NET Honours will feature 25 categories, including new award categories celebrating the most played songs in Nigeria during the period under review.
According to organisers, the Most Played Songs categories are based on verifiable data supplied by Corrents, a Nigerian music analytics startup. The company analyses data from airplay on over 100 local radio stations and streaming platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.
Over 90% of the audience on ID Africa’s media properties –– Netng, Neusroom, 234Star, and Orin –– are Nigerians below 40 years old. This means that NET Honours as a platform provides valuable insights into the people, events and pop culture interests that greatly appeal to Nigeria’s active population.
At its virtual debut last year, the awards reached over 10 million people in 31 countries and yielded over 65 million impressions worldwide. The event also received engagement from celebrities such as American rapper Cardi B, Funke Akindele, Toke Makinwa, Peter Okoye, Yul Edochie, and Toyin Saraki, among several others.
Femi Falodun, CEO of ID Africa, explains that NET Honours reflects the current direction of Nigerian pop culture.
“NET Honours is unique because it is solely based on online audience engagement data that was recorded by Netng and its sister platforms for the year”, says Falodun. “The diversity of categories and nominees paints a good picture of the personalities and conversations that Nigeria’s youth population truly cares about. These are useful insights for brands and businesses trying to understand consumer behaviour, media trends and pop culture.”
Winners will be announced on Sunday, June 20, 2021, on the Netng website and Netng’s social media platforms.
