In case you live under the rocks and haven’t heard the news, Black Panther movie is out. What makes it interesting to talk about is the cast! A black woman playing a character of substantial significance in a superhero movie; how amazing was Lupita Nyong’o?
From the minute Mexican born Kenyan actress showed her genuine and convincing performance in 12 Years a Slave, Africans knew they had a star in Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita rose to slight fame in the MTV Base series, Shuga, a 2009 drama that explored sexual relationships among youth in Nairobi, Kenya. She starred as Ayira, the beautiful, confident and high spirited college student, in Shuga series 1. The show’s numerous steamy sex scenes proved a great way to raise HIV/AIDS awareness.
Nyong’o has not failed in blowing our minds by going from MTV Shuga to a leading actress in a modern depiction of a black superhero movie, Black Panther. The movie which has been tagged the most radical superhero film crossed $500 million mark in worldwide box office thanks to the astounding performance of the cast.
Lupita’s win in Hollywood gives Africans hope that anything and everything is possible.
