8th Wonda: The Global Tribute for Sound Sultan

Tribute for Sound Sultan

Today, the world can look back at the life of Olanrewaju ‘Sound Sultan’ Fasasi, and picture what a fulfilling life the iconic talent created for himself. Not only was he relevant in the music industry, but he also showed up as an actor, comedian, basketball player, songwriter, and used his music for education and social commentary.

Life doesn’t really prepare one for death. For the most part, we just keep living and hoping that at the point of exit from this world, we would somehow be remembered for the impact we’ve made. With every success and milestone Sound Sultan achieved, I can’t help but wonder if he ever felt he had done enough. Every single year, the world seems to be losing some of our best talents to cancer. The deadly illness did not consider how much the world still needs selfless men like Sound Sultan who was so down to earth and relevant to every single cause they stood for.

After battling Angioimmunoblastic T-cell Lymphoma (AITL) for a while, the news of Sound Sultan’s death broke the internet on Sunday, July 11, 2021 (the same day he was laid to rest). The truth is, there are so many untold stories of cancer victims and survivors but we mostly hear about the demise of those who have touched the world in more ways than one. This goes to show how fleeting life is. While we are alive, it’s easy to see how much we are loved by our family, friends, and everyone else. However, without leaving a legacy, something to be remembered for, we are most likely going to be another memory that fades away with time.

Sound Sultan was not only a friend of our company, he also made valuable contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry by participating in our NECLive events and other programmes. He is forever in our hearts and for this reason, the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) has collaborated with his family, friends, colleagues, and fans to host an evening of music, poetry, dance, comedy, and talk in honour and celebration of a life well-lived.
