Google is riding the marketing scene well. Just a few days ago, the company launched the Google News Initiative (GNI) with three main objectives, one of them being to elevate and strengthen quality journalism. That way, everyone can tell the difference between fake and real news and the use of malicious content can be reduced.
While we’re hyped up about the whole thing, we were able to get 5 unusual facts about this new Google platform.
- Huge investments
Google plans to invest over $300 million into anti-fake news over the next three years. The company will team up with a fact checking organisation, First Draft to ensure fake information is eliminated while encouraging accurate news.
- Bringing new tools
The platform would have tools on it to work with. The company intends to introduce new products that can address the news industry’s needs. It released an open source tool which will help journalists access the internet securely and easily.
- Subscription
People will be able to subscribe to proper news media via the platform. Publishers in turn will get to earn from news subscriptions when consumers pay to have access to their channels. Some of the first publishers to enjoy this initiative are The New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times and The Telegraph.
- Better security
They plan to focus on having better algorithms and security tools which will allow journalists set up VPNs on private servers for confidential stories.
- Better ways to grow subscriptions
The company is conducting specific experiments to develop better means for media channels to grow subscribers. These research involves checking if there are models that will recognise potential customers and narrow them down for the publishers.
This would mean alot for the media industry, we’re so looking forward to it.
